Victory Day marks the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany, a date that carries enormous symbolic weight in Russia. This year marked the 81st anniversary of that moment. The parade honors the roughly 27 million Soviet casualties of the Second World War.
This year’s version was notably restrained. The celebration was significantly scaled back, though the precise reasons weren’t spelled out in Putin’s remarks.
US President Donald Trump announced a three-day ceasefire set to begin on May 9, the same day as the parade. The ceasefire included a plan for prisoner exchanges, with 1,000 personnel from each side slated to be returned.
Trump described the ceasefire as potentially the “beginning of the end” of the conflict.
Four years and counting
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. A three-day ceasefire is not a peace deal.
